2024 was declared the year of the general and poet Rudolf Maister, as next year marks 150 years since his birth and 90 years since his death. Twenty years since Slovenia’s accession to the European Union is another important anniversary to be celebrated next year.
Artist, poet and general Rudolf Maister played an important role in Slovenian history. He is known as the fighter for the Northern border. To commemorate 23 November 1918, the day when the city of Maribor became Slovenian again, we celebrate Rudolf Maister Day, a national holiday. Did you know that at the time of Maister’s birth, Kamnik witnessed a boom in hop growing and brewing? Today, Kamnik is regarded as the town with the largest number of microbreweries. Join in the fan frenzy at large competitions in Slovenia. It’ll be particularly lively in winter when World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and ski jumping will be organised at four venues. In the summer, the eyes of sports fans will initially focus on the European Football Championship in Germany, where Slovenia will be competing after 24 years, and then it’s on to Paris, where Slovenian athletes will compete for Olympic medals.
In the warmer months, running and cycling competitions will be organised in Slovenia, one of them being the traditional Tour of Slovenia, which will celebrate 30 years in 2024. Kayakers and canoeists will tackle the wild rapids of the Sava River in Tacen during the European Canoe Slalom Championships, and many junior competitions will take place in Slovenia, too.
