Stories from Slovenia

Kamnik

A charming medieval town nestled in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

Kamnik is a medieval town with two castles, a monastery and a colourful street lined with artisan workshops. The town is inextricably linked with the Velika Planina plateau and its shepherding tradition. It is only a few minutes away from the largest Slovenian arboretum and the Terme Snovik spa, the spa nearest to the capital.

I regard it as an immense privilege to live in Kamnik. This city embodies foreigners’ fantasies of what Alpine life could be.

Visiting the shepherds at Velika Planina

Visit Velika Planina, one of Slovenia’s most beautiful mountain pastures. Breathe in the fresh mountain air while taking a walk, a long-distance hike or a bicycle ride in the summer. Treat yourself to a memorable nocturnal sledding adventure in the winter, or traverse the snowy landscape in snowshoes. If skiing delights are what you are after, visit the family ski slope offering 2.8 km of well-tended trails covered in natural snow.

Water fun at Terme Snovik spa

Treat yourself to a family trip to Terme Snovik, the highest-altitude spa in Slovenia. Swim in the indoor or outdoor thermal pool, while children get up to all kinds of shenanigans on the water-slide. Stroll along the well-kept themed footpaths in the vicinity of the spa. Treat yourself to a break in pristine nature and spend the night at one of the apartment houses.

The mysteries of the Kamniška Bistrica Valley

Find peace in the valley of Kamniška Bistrica. The area is full of natural sights you can explore on foot or by bike. Take the Koželj Trail all the way to the spring of Kamniška Bistrica. For the more adventurous among you, the upper part of the valley, Konec, will be of interest as it features numerous glacial remnants. For families, the trail leading to the Orglica Waterfall – Orličje is more suitable.

Green facts

Slovenia is writing its green story. Feel it at every turn.

Velika Planina is one of the rare preserved Alpine herding settlements in Europe, where herders take their cattle every year.

The healing resort at Tunjice features a spring of living water, which has been scientifically studied and tested. Living water maintains optimum energy in your body.

A little over 26% of Kamnik’s surface is protected under Natura 2000.

The trnič cheese from Velika Planina is protected as intangible cultural heritage.

Trnič cheese

Trnič is a type of pear-shaped hard cheese made of cottage cheese, cream and salt, embellished with special ornaments. Shepherds made trnič mostly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Each shepherd had his own pattern, a small wooden board with carvings, which he used to decorate the cheese. The gift of trnič was intended to delight the girls of Kamnik who were in love. Today, you can use trnič to treat your nearest and dearest. Make a delicious ice cream with trnič.
