Ljubljana and its surroundings
The Ljubljana Marshes Nature Park, where the remains of the several thousand-years-old culture of pile-dwellers were discovered, leading to the area being placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, is an excellent cycling destination. An ascent to Velika Planina, the highest mountain plateau in Slovenia, which has one of the few herdsmen’s settlements still extant in Europe, also delights with its wonderful views.
A special experience on the Slovenian coast is a ride on Parenzana or Porečanka, a picturesque cycling route running along the Sečovlje Salt Pans Landscape Park. The trail bears the name of the Istrian rail between the Italian town of Trieste and the Croatian town of Poreč. Fertile vineyards, orchards and olive groves curve along the route.
An Alpine ride from Bohinj to Bled leads through the unspoiled Triglav National Park. From the Savica Waterfall, which is the spring of the River Sava Bohinjka, and all the way to the iconic Lake Bled, open air cycling is enhanced by one of Slovenia's most beautiful natural landscapes. Treat yourself to the traditional Cream Cake at Lake Bled as a sweet refreshment after cycling. Take on the challenge and ride your bike over Vršič pass and down to the charms of the Soča Valley, or get to know the beauties of Koroška in its wonderful mountain areas, along the Drava River or underground.
The Goričko Regional Park in the north-eastern part of the country beckons you to ride among its picturesque hills, which will appeal primarily to advanced cyclists. In the flatlands between Murska Sobota and Lendava you can choose among several cycling paths that lead among thermal mineral water springs and spas. Enrich your cycling trip by ascending the Vinarium Observation Tower in the Lendavske Gorice Region, which is the highest in the country at almost 54 metres in height. From there you can catch a view of four countries - Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Austria. Discover the idyllic world along the Mura River. Stop off at Love Island, visit the floating mill and travel across the river on the ferry. Follow the Drava River through unspoiled nature and urban landscapes from Koroška through the capital of Štajerska, Maribor, to Slovenia’s oldest town, Ptuj.
The Bela Krajina Region
In the Bela Krajina Region, cyclists can ride along the River Kolpa, one of the warmest and cleanest rivers in the country, where lush vegetation grows along the banks. Such is its natural wonder that it won the title of EDEN (European Destination of Excellence) in 2010. A part of the river is located in the protected area under the Kolpa Nature Park, where you can also go fishing.
Visit one of the best cycling marathons in the world, the renowned Franja Marathon, which takes place in Ljubljana in June. On the first Saturday of September, you can participate in the Ride to Vršič, where you ride to the highest Slovenian mountain pass. At the Tour of Slovenia, international cycling stars compete each year in stage race cycling events.
