Central markets are at the heart of every town
This is certainly true of the Ljubljana Central Market designed by the famous architect Jože Plečnik. You can take a walk through the market accompanied by a tourist guide who will reveal to you the most interesting stories and show you the lesser known and hidden spots.
During the walk, you will stop to taste seasonal treats produced by local farmers and sourced from places near Ljubljana. You will finish the walk with a tasty, fresh and locally produced breakfast in a restaurant in the immediate vicinity of the market.
Are you ready for a tasty beginning of the day in Ljubljana?
The Central Market is the lively heart of Ljubljana, where outdoor stands groan beneath the weight of fresh fruit and vegetables, while dairy, meat, bakery and other products are readily available inside. You can have your first coffee in cafes early in the morning. The products and services offered by the market are supplemented by the various menus in restaurants and the tasty treats provided by street food stands. The Yummy Market Walk is a different and more unforgettable way to experience the Ljubljana Central Market. Meet its vendors and their stories and learn about our diverse gastronomic heritage. Gain new useful knowledge. Taste the treats of Ljubljana from a rich seasonal supply offered by local providers and pick the fresh ingredients from which your Ljubljana breakfast is made.
What to expect from the experience
Designed as a boutique experience, the walk is carried out in groups of up to six people.
The guide will introduce part of the legacy of architect Jože Plečnik, the creator of the covered market by the Ljubljanica River, to you in more detail, and by talking a walk through the market, you will feel its lively buzz.
The experience includes a tasting of the produce and products of local providers: fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, homemade salamis and cheeses, homemade bread from flour they mill themselves, etc.
Knowledge-seeking individuals can learn how to clean fish correctly or make a dry flower bouquet.
After walking for an hour and a half, it will be time for a delicious Ljubljana breakfast consisting of the fresh produce and products of providers from Ljubljana and its surroundings, served up in one of the eateries in the immediate vicinity of the market.
Schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 9:00 / each day from Tuesday to Saturday at 9:00
Discover the hidden spots and interesting stories of the Central Market. Enjoy the selected fresh treats of local providers and the famous Ljubljana breakfast.
The Central Market comprises an outdoor market (in Vodnik and Pogačar Square), a covered market between the said markets, and Plečnik's covered market by the Ljubljanica River. It is adorned with a statue of Valetin Vodnik, the author of the first cookbook in Slovenian.
Dishes included in the Ljubljana breakfast are seasonal and diverse. They may be modern or traditional, made the way our grandmothers made them. It is only important that the ingredients are from Ljubljana and its surroundings as part of the Green Supply Chains.
The famous food market Open Kitchen, where chefs from Slovenian restaurants make various dishes from countries around the world, takes place in Pogačar Square every Friday from mid-March to the end of October. The same place hosts an ecological market offering diverse ecological products on Saturdays.
The famous architect Jože Plečnik designed the covered market as a string of covered areas situated on two levels by the river. The section oriented towards the water is equipped with semi-circular windows, while the section oriented towards the road is embellished with two long rows of distinctive pillars.
