Tour of Slovenia – the peak cycling event on Slovenian roads

The Tour of Slovenia is the country’s main cycling event, featuring a top-class field of Slovenian and international professional cyclists. Make a note of this year’s dates and take a look at some impressions from past races!

In the company of top cyclists on Tour of Slovenia

The Tour of Slovenia international cycling race, organised by the Adria Mobil Cycling Club, has been the greatest and most popular cycling event in Slovenia for several years.

In the six years of cooperation between the Tour of Slovenia and broadcasters Eurosport and RTV Slovenia, more than 56 million have watched the race on television, and more than 10 million last year alone.

Having hosted many world-class cyclists and teams since its launch more than 30 years ago, the Tour of Slovenia has established itself as an event of international stature. The winners of the race include Slovenian aces and currently two of the world's top cyclists, Primož Roglič and Tadej Pogačar. In its rich history, the race has become a unique sporting event that with its varied stage routes connects places across Slovenia and attracts large crowds of spectators, both on the roadside and in front of TV screens, spreading the good word about Slovenia and its image of a boutique and green country.

Although it officially celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, the 2024 Tour of Slovenia is the 30th edition of the race. The race was cancelled only once. In 2024, cyclists will race in Slovenia between 12 and 16 June.

Stage 1: Murska Sobota – Ormož

12 June 2024

The first stage of the 2024 Tour of Slovenia showcases the charm of the Pomurje region. It starts in Murska Sobota where the Expano pavilion serves as a gateway to north-eastern Slovenia. The region’s gems are the thermal spas Moravske Toplice and Radenci. The first one is known for its unique black thermal mineral water, and the latter for its soothing mineral water rich in CO2. The Vinarium Lookout Tower in Lendava offers spectacular views of four countries. The first stage also takes you past Ljutomer, known for its harness racing tradition, and the centre of Prlekija, across the picturesque vineyards on the Jeruzalem hills all the way to the finish line in Ormož. During the first stage, the cyclists will also cross into neighbouring countries Hungary and Croatia.

The hop-growing centre of Slovenia, famous for its beer fountain and Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry, also this year hosts the start of the second stage. The Šaleška Valley and its town of Velenje have a rich heritage of coal mining. The ancient Romans, the Counts of Celje and the world traveller Alma Karlin left their mark on historic Celje. Laško is where the traditions of beer brewing, beekeeping and thermal tourism meet. Before crossing the finish line in Rogaška Slatina, famous for its mineral water with the highest magnesium content in the world and its exceptional crystalware, cyclists pass another historic town, Šentjur.

The third stage starts in the green capital of Slovenia which takes great pride in its rich UNESCO heritage of the works of architect Jože Plečnik. After the mostly flat edges of the Ljubljana Marshes and a climb through the Trnovo Forest, the fertile Vipava Valley opens up, home to the largest number of indigenous wine grape varieties in Slovenia. The picturesque villages in the Vipava Valley welcome the caravan of cyclists before it enters Italy and, via Vrtojba, returns to Slovenia. The cyclists then take a detour across the idyllic Brda hills before arriving at the final destination of this stage in Nova Gorica, the 2025 European Capital of Culture together with its Italian twin, Gorizia.

The Ljubljana Marshes and their heritage of pile-dwellers, and the town of Škofja Loka with its Škofja Loka Passion Play, are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The historic towns of Kranj and Kamnik each have their own character; Kranj as the cultural heart of Slovenia and the capital of the Alps, and Kamnik with its craft heritage lining one of the town's most delightful streets, and Velika Planina, a mountain pasture area with shepherds’ huts.

Visitors to this region of vineyard cottages and Cviček wine are enchanted by its landscape of rolling hills. Kostanjevica na Krki, also called Slovenia's "Venice" due to its location on an island on the Krka River, boasts the Božidar Jakac Gallery in the former Cistercian monastery. But this is not the only populated area on the Krka River. Further upstream there is also the magnificent Otočec castle. The route continues along the Sava River with the mighty Rajhenburg and Sevnica castles on its banks. Hayracks, a special feature of Slovenia, are exhibited at the open-air museum in Šentrupert.
