Slovenia: the rising star in the cycling world

Cycling is very popular in Slovenia and the country is further boosting its recognisability with such events, showing that it is an excellent destination for cycling and active holidays. In recent years, the green country in the heart of Europe has established its place among the global cycling elite, especially due to the exceptional success of Slovenian cyclists headed by the extraordinary Primož Roglič and Tadej Pogačar. Numerous times, Slovenia has also proved itself as a successful host of large sports competitions.

And the Tour of Slovenia is no exception. The tour has drawn the attention of the global public and that of the umbrella cycling organisation. The International Cycling Union (UCI) has qualified the tour as UCI Hors Class, which is the highest competition rank in road cycling of the UCI World Tour series.

As many as five WorldTour teams will attend this year’s tour

As many as five WorldTour, eight Professional Continental, all Slovenian professional teams and teams from Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia will attend this year’s Tour of Slovenia.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Emirates), one of the leading Slovenian cycling superstars and the current winner of the prestigious 2020 Tour de France, will also attend the Tour of Slovenia. Pogačar is considered one of the favourites to ultimately win the tour. In the past, the current best Slovenian cyclist, Primož Roglič, excelled in the Tour of Slovenia as well. He won the tour twice, in 2015 and 2018.

In addition to the main favourites for overall victory, participating in the tour will be several other Slovenians who have drawn attention with their achievements in prestigious international races: …

Among the high-profile foreign cyclists, we should also mention ...

Tadej Pogačar

The winner of Tour de France 2020, the youngest winner after 1904 in the history of the prestigious race and the first Slovenian to win the French "grande boucle".

Fight for Green: the cycling race marked by sustainability

For a number of years now, the slogan of the Tour of Slovenia has been the "Fight for Green", which has a double significance: the cyclists race for the green jersey of the tour’s overall winner, while simultaneously Slovenia’s commitment and that of Slovenian tourism to protect the environment and towards sustainable development are also put at the forefront.

Among this year’s destinations involved in the Tour of Slovenia project, as many as nine are embellished with the Slovenia Green Destination label: three have a golden, three a silver and three a bronze label.

The tour is an excellent opportunity for the Slovenian tourism and tourist destinations to be collectively showcased as a green and healthy country. In particular, a haven for active holidays. Suitable infrastructure and experiences complement the wonderful natural elements, thus making Slovenia an excellent sports and recreational destination for all seasons of the year.

Furthermore, high hygiene and health standards were also established, which form the Green & Safe responsible travel standards together with sustainable orientation.

Green & Safe

We are aware that travel habits have changed over the past year, which is why we have decided to focus even more on sustainability and safety. When planning your next visit to Slovenia, keep an eye out for the Green&Safe label. The label testifies to our sustainable direction and high health and hygiene standards, among the first in the world to be acknowledged by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), which awarded us the Safe Travels Stamp.
