Olympic gold medallist and one of the best cyclists in the world, Primož Roglič prefers to spend time with his family at home in Slovenia after the end of the cycling season. As a former professional ski jumper, spending his winter days in Slovenia is a particularly precious experience for him.

His wife Lora and their son stand by Primož's side throughout the season and cheer him on at the biggest cycling events around the world. Planica and Kranjska Gora – where winter fun is at home all year round

Primož has the most emotional memories of his career as a ski jumper in Planica. The venue under the Ponce Mountains has hosted the world's best ski jumpers for more than 80 years. It is a symbol of tradition and pushing the limits of performance, boasting more than 40 world records in ski jumping and flying. The unique scenery of the Julian Alps, rising behind the ski jumps and flying hills, attracts tens of thousands of ski jumping and flying fans from all over the world each year at the end of winter.

Since 2015, the Planica Nordic Centre has been offering many exciting sports activities under one roof all year round, such as cross-country skiing in the snow tunnel, curling in the summer and the wind tunnel, where you can experience the sensation of flying on the Planica Giant. Disc golf is also a special feature of the centre. In summer, the most popular attraction is the zipline from Planica flying hill, which is the steepest zipline in the world.

Not far away, Kranjska Gora has a rich winter sports tradition of alpine skiing. The traditional venue for the Alpine Ski World Cup, which is renowned as one of the most challenging slopes in the World Cup, also boasts a number of ski slopes suitable for the youngest skiers' first turns. Lora and Primož are also keen to introduce their son to as many different sports as possible, and he is currently most enthusiastic about sledding. "He especially likes to go as fast as possible on the sledge, which is also a good physical activity for Primož and me," Lora explains with a laugh, adding that he is as keen on cross-country skiing as his parents and has been skiing on his own since he was two years old.

Winter is not complete without winter fun at Rogla

Although Rogla is more closely associated with Primož in the summer, as it is his favourite mountain to climb in Slovenia on a bike, it is the Roglič family's favourite choice in winter. They often choose to travel around Slovenia by motorhome, as it allows them to have their house on wheels with them at all times. An organised children's snow party at Rogla is a great way to make the winter holidays more enjoyable for the little ones, while their parents can enjoy the white slopes or go cross-country skiing.

More skiing and cross-country skiing fun with a single pass

Slovenia is a country where the distances between places are not great, and this is also the case for ski centres and cross-country skiing trails. That means you can try skiing or cross-country skiing in several winter sports centres during your short break. What’s more, there are the Single Ski Pass and the Single Cross-Country Ski Pass, which allow you to go skiing or cross-country skiing in several different locations.

The mountaineering village, which is becoming one of the most popular cross-country skiing centres in Slovenia

Jezersko is the first mountaineering village in Slovenia, famous for its exceptional mountain nature. Tradition and sustainable tourism are on the same side. While summer is dominated by hikers conquering the peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, in winter Jezersko becomes a true cross-country skiing centre. Lora and Primož also attest to the excellence of the cross-country skiing trails, which are snow-covered even when there is not enough snow in the valley. The variety of cross-country skiing trails with views of the glacier below Skuta and Grintavci on the one hand and the Karavanke Ridge on the other are an unforgettable experience for any Nordic ski enthusiast.

"Our ideal winter day ends in the company of family and friends with a full table of delicacies. Since I follow a prescribed diet programme during the cycling season, winter is also an opportunity to indulge. Traditional Slovenian dishes prepared in a new and creative way catch my attention and I always like to try something new," explains Roglič. Both he and Lora are also big fans of Slovenian wines. Especially Lora, who was so fascinated by wine culture that she trained as a sommelier. Slovenian restaurants are renowned for their wide selection of local wines, produced in the wine cellars of the three wine-growing regions.
