Everyone can enjoy cross-country skiing: true cross-country enthusiasts and beginners. If you are considering taking up this sport, you can start in a cross-country skiing school. We have selected some of the most popular cross-country skiing destinations. Is your cross-country skiing equipment prepared?
Skiing through the Upper Sava Valley
Kranjska Gora and its surrounding area are intertwined with cross-country trails in winter time. Some 40 kilometres of well-maintained cross-country trails will take you from the centre of Kranjska Gora to Planica Nordic Centre, where you can also cross-country ski in the summer, and onwards to the scenic Tamar Valley. The section of the trail between Rateče and Tamar is suitable for more skilled cross-country skiers. Maintained trails are also located on the way towards Gozd Martuljek, Mojstrana and Zgornja Radovna. If you do not find the time for cross-country skiing during the day, you can also venture on the trails at night in Kranjska Gora.
Cross-country skiing among spruces and hills on Pokljuka
The Pokljuka Plateau is the right place for all lovers of cross-country skiing. Over 30 kilometres of regularly maintained cross-country trails connect various parts of the plateau. There is a sports centre at Rudno polje, which is known as a venue of biathlon world cup competitions. Skiing through spruce forests and across mountain pastures with exceptional views of the surrounding peaks of the Julian Alps is a guarantee that you will feel like you are in a winter fairy tale.
A cross-country skiing paradise in Bohinj
If leaving Pokljuka in the direction of Goreljek and Gorjuše, you will find another paradise for cross-country skiing. When snow conditions are good, there are over 70 kilometres of maintained cross-country trails in the Bohinj area. In addition to the trails on Pokljuka, you can also cross-country ski on the trails running along the Upper and Lower Bohinj Valley. You can find shorter trails with awe-inspiring mountain views at Vogel and Soriška planina.
Rogla from a cross-country skiing perspective
If you wish to enthuse your entire family about cross-country skiing then come to Rogla. The cross-country skiing centre has 24 kilometres of maintained trails for top cross-country skiers and those taking their first steps on cross-country skis. The centre is located near ski slopes, so you can ski and cross-country ski in one day.
On cross-country skis in the shelter of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps
At Jezersko, cross-country skiing has a long tradition since the people of Jezersko organised cross-country skiing competitions before Alpine skiing competitions. In perfect snow conditions, it is possible to ski on 15 kilometres of maintained cross-country trails across meadows stretching from Lake Planšar to the end of the valley. You can also find many cross-country trails on the other side of the mountains in the Logar Valley. On 13 kilometres of arranged trails, you can enjoy the beautiful vistas of one of the most picturesque Alpine valleys.
Cross-country trails are everywhere
In addition to the most popular cross-country skiing destinations, it is possible to cross-country ski almost everywhere in Slovenia if weather conditions permit it. The majority of other Slovenian ski centres, such as Mariborsko Pohorje, Kope or Cerkno have also got well-maintained trails for cross-country skiing. A popular cross-country ski destination in the Karst is the Bloke Plateau, which is considered the cradle of skiing in Central Europe. A true adventure is also cross-country skiing between the mighty peaks of the Julian Alps in the Bovec region.
