Children, the three good men are coming!
December is the time of the year that is most anticipated by children. Three good men visit the children in Slovenia: St Nicholas, Santa Claus and Father Frost. You can meet them in all towns in Slovenia and they also travel through the streets of larger Slovenian towns with their entourage. St Nicholas’ entourage includes Krampuses who according to folk tradition scare naughty children. You can visit the largest fire spectacle of Krampuses in Podkoren, where frightening hairy creatures gather from the three neighbouring countries: Slovenia, Austria and Italy.
The most beautiful re-enactments of the Christmas story
You can witness several re-enactments of the nativity in Slovenia. The most spectacular is the living nativity scene that takes place in the underground kingdom of stalactites and stalagmites in Postojna Cave. The uniqueness of the nativity play in the Mlačca Gorge near Mojstrana lies in its frozen scenery and masterful ice sculptures at the entrance to the performance venue. Would you like to see a living nativity scene which in addition to people also features live animals? If yes, then you must visit Ljubljana Zoo. At the end of the year, the Christmas story also comes to life in Pekel Cave.
New Year’s Eve outdoor celebrations
Spend the longest night of the year on the streets of Slovenian towns. New Year’s Eve celebrations spiced up with music and food are the perfect opportunity for socialising. Among the mass celebrations, the one in the centre of Ljubljana must be mentioned. In Maribor, the largest celebration takes place at Leon Štukelj Square. The December festivities will end in Kranj with a New Year’s Eve celebration on the Main Square. In Celje, you can spend New Year’s Eve at Krek Square. Lively activities will also take place on the Main Square in Novo mesto on the onset of the new year. On the coast, you can celebrate New Year’s Eve in the romantic embrace of Tartini Square in Piran.
