Hunting for the most beautiful autumn colours!

Are you one of those people who just loves a beautiful blend of autumn colours? If your answer is yes, here are some tips on where to go on foot or by bike to admire the autumn beauty. Some of the trails and viewpoints along the way are especially worth visiting in autumn, and even those who aren't already 'fans' of autumn will be delighted by the magical scenes.

Slemenova špica hill

You can go to Slemenova Špica hill from the Vršič mountain pass, while fitter hikers among us can reach it from the Tamar Valley. Although the trail is not difficult, you will need suitable hiking shoes and equipment. Along the way, you will be enchanted by Alpine meadows with golden larch trees. The small lakes that are formed after the rains reflect the mighty surrounding peaks of the Julian Alps – Jalovec, Mojstrovka and Ponce. The perfect autumnal mountain symphony!

Slivnica

Slivnica offers a picturesque view of the intermittent Cerknica Lake on one side and Snežnik on the other. You can climb it from a number of different starting points. Although Slivnica is popular with both hikers and cyclists all year round, it has a special charm in autumn. Legend has it that witches and their mistress Uršula choose Mount Slivnica as their home. They supposedly brewed up their potions, rain and storms in the cave beneath the peak. Maybe you'll run into them around Halloween, when they have their own feast day.

Slavnik

In autumn, the Karst edge comes to life in the fiery colours of the smoke bush (known as ruj in Slovenian). In its 20-kilometre stretch, it offers sumptuous views of the colourful landscape of the Karst and Istria, connecting charming villages that, despite their apparent modesty, have plenty to show off. One of the most beautiful views is from the top of Slavnik and, if the weather allows, you can see the Adriatic Sea, the Julian Alps and even the Dolomites.

Cerje

The panoramic viewpoint of the Cerje hill is one of the stops on the long-distance Walk of Peace trail. At its peak, 342 meters above sea level, stands a Monument of Peace that connects the past and present and reminds us of the futility of war. Cerje overlooks a breath-taking view of the Vipava Valley, the Gulf of Trieste, the Friuli Plain and the Brda Hills. In mid-autumn, these views are especially picturesque, as they are adorned by the fiery colours of the smoke bush. You may decide to take a pleasant autumn hike from Trstelj to Cerje.
