Due to the distinctive soils, climate, and cellaring methods, each wine-growing region has a unique selection of varieties. Slovenian vineyards are located in the very heart of the European wine-growing zone. The vine belt of ideal locations includes Slovenian wine-growing regions and areas such as Burgundy in France, while the intertwining of climate and soil influences enables Slovenia to diversify its wine offer. The Primorska wine-growing region

A land of strong dry wines, where tastes are shaped by the soil terra rossa, the bora wind, and the Mediterranean climate, and which is popular among wine aficionados.

The Podravje wine-growing region

The Podravje wine-growing region boasts sunny hillsides in the east of Slovenia, which rank among the top 4% of the best wine-growing sites on Earth!

The Posavje wine-growing region

The Posavje wine-growing region, named after the Sava River, is the home of a speciality among Slovenian wines, Cviček, as well as typical vineyard cottages among vineyards and underground turnip caves.

The Primorska wine-growing region is the most diverse wine-growing region with its four wine-growing districts. Each wine-growing district has its own character and distinctive wines. Owing to the warm Mediterranean climate, the most famous Slovenian red wines originate from this region, as well as the renowned white and increasingly appreciated orange wines. Although not the largest in terms of surface area, the Primorska region leads in wine production in Slovenia and has the most award-winning wines and winemakers. Wine roads in Brda, Vipava, the Karst, and Istria connect the region.

Vipava Valley

The largest wine-growing district of the Primorska wine-growing region, where, among other wines, the most indigenous varieties originate, such as Pinela, Zelen and Klarnica.

Brda

The idyllic Brda district is home to famous Slovenian winemakers who produce several varieties of white wines, among which Rebula is the most renowned, as well as the red wines Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Karst

When we speak of the Karst, we can't pass by its greatest star among wines — Teran. It has a distinctly full flavour and the red Karst soil (terra rossa) gives it a characteristic colour.

Slovenian Istria

The grapes caressed by the warm rays of the sun in the hinterland of Slovenian Istria produce the rich flavours of the most famous Slovenian coastal wines — white Malvazia and red Refošk.

The Podravje wine-growing region – wines pampered by the sun

In Slovenia's largest wine-growing region, divided into two wine-growing districts, vines have been thriving since ancient Roman times. The favourable soil composition and continental climate have produced elegant white wines of international quality and some indigenous varieties. The most widely used white varieties are Italian Riesling, Sauvignon, Rhein Riesling, Chardonnay, and the regional speciality Furmint, and Yellow Muscat. Among the red varieties, mainly Blue Franconian, Pinot Noir, and Žametna Črnina (Red Velvet) are consumed. The area of Radgonsko-Kapelske Gorice is a world of sparkling wines, and Prekmurje is home to excellent predicate wines. They are also based on indigenous varieties, such as Ranina.

Maribor, in the Podravje wine-growing region, is home to a more than 450-year-old grapevine, the oldest in the world. Ptuj has the oldest winery in Slovenia, with the oldest vintage wine dating back to 1917. Gornja Radgona has the longest – 150-year – tradition of sparkling wine production.

Drops from the oldest grapevine in the world

In Maribor, a grapevine of the Žametovka or Modra Kavčina (Red Velvet) variety – which is one of the oldest domesticated noble wine varieties in Slovenia – has been growing for more than 400 years. The grapevine, which is a special attraction of Slovenia, produces up to 55 kilograms of red grapes a year. After the festive harvest, the town’s cellars carefully turn it into Žametna Črnina (Red Velvet) wine. It is filled in 2.5-decilitre bottles with a special shape.

The Posavje wine-growing region – the region of Slovenian wine speciality

When we talk about the Posavje wine-growing region, we cannot overlook Cviček, a speciality of Slovenian viticulture. For many years, Posavje has had a reputation as a producer of lighter white and red wines, although the region is home to international varieties as well as local specialities.It is home to the largest number of wines with a recognised traditional denomination label.The special features of the region are not only the wines, but also the vineyard cottages (zidanice), which are small brick houses in the vineyards, where you can spend the night, and the turnip caves (repnice), i.e. special cellars dug directly into the ground.

Cviček wine is made from at least four varieties. Mixing the dominant red and the added white varieties gives it a reddish colour and a pleasantly acidic taste. This easy drinking wine has low alcohol content (8-9%) and in moderation even helps to maintain health.
