A treasure trove of millennia
Ptuj is the oldest cities in Slovenia. Perched above the city the mighty Ptuj Castle offers splendid views far and wide and hosts the Ptuj Ormož Regional Museum, whose permanent exhibition will take you on a journey through the millennia of the city’s history. Ptuj’s is not the only castle you can see in the region – there are many other historic castles worth a visit.
The Dominican and Minorite Monastery, together with the city castle, all shape the Ptuj townscape. Other sights worth seeing are monuments, the City Tower and the City Hall. Art lovers will enjoy visiting galleries showcasing the works of local and foreign artists as well as master craftsmen and artisans.
The most notable of Ptuj’s events is the international Shrovetide carnival called Kurentovanje that enjoys a tradition of more than 50 years. The festival week features many ethnographic and carnival parades, concerts, dances in fancy dress and more. At the end of August visit the Days of Poetry and Wine, one of the most important European poetry festivals, where poetry readings are accompanied by other arts.
Into the spa and onto the golf course
Ptuj Thermal Spa offers excellent opportunities for active holidays in the thermal waters of pools indoors and out. Golf lovers will be able to relax on the golf course that features diverse terrain and many water hazards. Ptuj and surroundings also offers plenty of opportunities to hike, cycle, fish, ride horses and more.
Food and wine
The outskirts of Ptuj form one of Slovenia’s best-loved wine regions, producing an excellent range of white wines. Ptuj Wine Cellar is the oldest wine cellar in the country, where you can listen to the story of its wine while walking through the many underground corridors. Take the Wine Road across the vine-growing hills of Slovenske Gorice and Haloze, and don’t forget to try some traditional Ptuj dishes.
