Bakeries and bakery in Ptuj over time

"If a piece of bread falls on your floor, pick it up and kiss it." Bakery products, especially bread, have always been an important food item, especially during times of war, when they were in short supply. The baking tradition also in the Ptuj area goes back to the distant past. In the Middle Ages, bakers were highly valued in cities, as the urban population depended on the import of grain and baking bread, which is also mentioned in the Ptuj city statutes from 1376 and 1513. The bakery business developed from bakers' and millers' guilds to bakers' and millers' guilds. craft associations, and after the war it was transformed into social property. Individual baking families slowly disappeared, and the Ptuj city government founded the Ptuj City Bakeries, which in the following decades ensured the basic supply of bakery products in the city of Ptuj, as well as in the wider area of Podravje. Milling was also closely related to baking, as flour was the main ingredient of bakery products. The work in the bakery workshops also coincided with the training of apprentices, assistants and learning from master bakers. The exhibition takes us into the past, when the baking craft was based on manual labor, all the way to the development of machines and tools that raised the craft to the level of industrial production.
