A Honeycomb of Words

It is no coincidence that Slovenian literature is in the spotlight of this year’s fair. The country lies on the crossroads between a variety of geographical regions, cultures and other influences. Just as bees venture out into the world to return to their hive with their precious nectar, so too have various cultural, artistic and intellectual influences entered the Slovenian language and culture. Authors, writers, poets, illustrators, translators, publishers, librarians, booksellers, and more, all of whom have worked together to build the honeycomb of words showcased in Frankfurt this autumn.

An innovative and inviting fair pavilion

Did you know that more than 93,000 trade visitors (i.e. booksellers, publishers and literary figures) and more than 87,000 private visitors from 106 countries visited last year’s Frankfurt Book Fair? As the Guest of Honour at this year’s fair, Slovenia is putting great emphasis on leaving a great impression on all visitors to its pavilion, designed especially for this occasion. The design is the work of a young architecture bureau, Studio Sadar. You can see a few visuals of the pavilion, which will host an incredibly rich and diverse programme, in the photo gallery.

A rich fair and accompanying programme

The organisers are putting together an exciting and dynamic programme in Frankfurt, showcasing not only the Slovenian literary world, but also other fields of art, as well as Slovenia itself as a tourist destination. The programme will feature a performance by the great Laibach and a special exhibition dedicated to the one and only Alma M. Karlin. The literary events, discussions, presentations of Slovenian works and authors will also be accompanied by numerous opportunities for networking and meeting people. A wide range of events, exhibitions and presentations in both Slovenia and Germany took place before the fair.

Four programme sections

The programme is divided into four main thematic sections. The first section will focus on the Slovenian literary landscape of the past 30 years, while the second will take a look at Slovenian authors on the world stage. The third section will be dedicated to small European publishing markets, and the fourth will highlight the importance of deep reading in the age of screens.

Slovenian culture: legends, pioneers and moderns mystics

The importance and greatness of the project Slovenia, Honorary Guest at the Frankfurt Book Fair, was also recognised by the Slovenian Tourist Board. At the beginning of this year, a literary story was created to launch a new culture video announcing this major event. Slovenia’s honorary function has been highlighted in press releases throughout the year, with a particular focus on the German market. We co-hosted two study tours for German journalists in Slovenia, and authors’ quotes and breath-taking images of Slovenia are being advertised on digital displays in Frankfurt. The STB will offer tourist information at the Slovenian pavilion and stand at the fair itself, and participate in the official opening ceremony and programme. A Slovenian reception will also be held on 17 October in Frankfurt.
