Slovenia is known as a green, active and healthy land, but its people also have a long tradition of living with the sea. The romantic town of Piran with picturesque medieval and Venetian architecture has developed due to the salt production at the Sečovlje salt pans. At these biggest and oldest salt pans in Slovenia, salt is still being produced in a traditional way based on a 700-year old method. When weather conditions are good, the workers produce between 50 to 60 tons of salt per day.

The Belgian-Slovenian VLM Airlines officially announced the establishment of seasonal flight connections between Maribor airport and airports in Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia. Until 29th August, the airline will connect the cities twice a week with a 50-seater Fokker 50.

Our green, active and healthy land is on the brink of new tourist records. In June 2017, more than 1.2 million tourist overnight stays were recorded, which represents 22% more than in June 2016. This means Slovenia had more than 487,000 arrivals or 27% more than last year. From the start of 2017 and up to the end of June, almost 5 million overnight stays were recorded in tourist accommodation in Slovenia, which is 12% more than last year.

Trivago, the world’s top hotel price comparison site, carried out a survey of which domestic destinations attracted the most interest in visitors this summer. The most popular Slovenian destinations were Portorož, Ljubljana, Bled, Izola, Piran, Koper, Maribor, Kranjska Gora, Bohinj and Strunjan, according to the data obtained from 55 international travel platforms. The survey was made with travellers from Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Hungary and Germany, and it included all searches carried out between 15th May 2017 and 15th July 2017 for a requested travel period of between 1st July 2017 and 31st August 2017.

At the 41st session of its World Heritage Committee in Krakow, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has inscribed 63 new areas of ancient and primeval beech forest in 10 countries onto the World Heritage List. Among them are two areas in Slovenia: the Krokar virgin forest and the Snežnik-Ždrocle forest reserve.

The EDEN SLO 2015-2017 project, which lasted eighteen months and was dedicated to promotion, development and education, ended on 30th June. Within the project, the Slovenian Tourist Board successfully implemented the promotion of Slovenian EDEN destinations. In May 2017 more than 846,000 tourist overnight stays were recorded, 5% more than in May 2016. In more detail, domestic tourists generated 6% more arrivals and 5% more overnight stays, while foreign tourists generated 8% more arrivals and 5% more overnight stays.
