Traditional Walk along the Wire in Ljubljana and opening of active season

Join an organised hike around the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, on the first weekend of May (4th to 6th May). The traditional Walk along the Wire celebrates when Ljubljana was freed of the barbed wire during the Second World War. One of the largest sports events in the capital has been held every year since 1957. On Saturday, hikers are joined by joggers in the three-member team run. This event promotes recreation and traditionally opens Ljubljana’s running season.

Members of the Slovenian Professional Guides Association (KPTVS), in co-operation with the Slovenian Beekepers’ Association, have established the first api-tourist guides for Slovenia. The guide designation is unique in the world, showing that the guides are educated in the fields of beekeeping, api-tourism and bees. As ambassadors of Slovenian api-tourism, they represent a connection between the providers of beekeeping tourism and tourists.

The Slovenian Tourist Board, in cooperation with the Bank of Tourism Potentials in Slovenia, have selected the finalists of the Snovalec (The Inventor) award for the recognition of creative and innovative ideas and projects in tourism. The Snovalec award encourages the promotion and fulfilment of new ideas in tourism, which will, when they are implemented in the future. This year, the professional jury chose 4 finalists from 45 applications.

The confirmed age of this “Žametovka” or “Modra Kavčina” vine is over 400 years, which won it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest noble vine in the world still bearing grapes. Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) has become one of the World’s Best Tourism Organisations. The decision was made by the jury of Flight Network, one of the Canada's leading online travel agencies. Among 140 candidates, STB was listed as 15th. The jury evaluated the tourism organisations from around the world mostly by their web sites.

With Ana Roš receiving the prestigious international award for World’s Best Female Chef 2017, and her Hiša Franko ranking among the World’s Best Restaurants, Slovenian cuisine is positioning Slovenia as the next top culinary destination. Last week, more culinary milestones were set by our green, active and healthy country. Chef Tomaž Kavčič, from Dvorec Zemono in the Vipava Valley, was awarded with an Innovation Award by JRE (Jeunes Restaurateurs), and Le Guide Michelin announced they would start evaluating Slovenian restaurants with their stars for the new Michelin guide.

Hiša Franko in western Slovenia is celebrating again. Last week the World’s Best Restaurants placed Hiša Franko in 69th place on their prestigious list, following Ana Roš’ announcement as the World’s Best Female Chef at the beginning of the year. This year, the committee increased the number of restaurants that each voter selects from 7 to 10, meaning there were more votes than ever before and an even stronger pool of unbeatable dining experiences across the world.
