From 23th-26th March 2017, Planica FIS World Cup Ski Jumping will host the best ski-jumpers in the world. This is the final competition of the season for the Slovenian Eagles, as the national ski jumping team are called. The history of ski jumping in Planica dates back to the 1930s, when the first milestone – a jump over 100m – was achieved. New world records followed and we are all wondering whether we will witness another one in the upcoming days.

The iconic alpine town of Bled in north-west Slovenia is on the cover of a brochure about luxury travel by plane published by National Geographic for 2017 and 2018. Slovenia is included in the itinerary called “Great Empires by Private Jet” and besides Bled, the journey also includes a visit to Ljubljana. "A short flight brings us to Ljubljana, where we will discover the diverse landscape of Slovenia, a crossroads of culture, located between the Alps and the Mediterranean," states the description.

Slovenia is the green heart of Europe, and was this year’s “Convention and Culture Partner ITB Berlin 2017" country at ITB Berlin 2017, from 8th-12th March. The country between the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Karst and the Pannonian Plain was represented by the slogan Slovenia Makes You Green, which was also seen throughout the entire venue on small green hearts. Through a National Geographic Legacy Award, Slovenia’s love of healthy waters and a clean environment, the level of conservation of the natural and cultural heritage, green towns and cities surrounded by nature, and the SLOVENIA GREEN national programme for developing sustainable tourism have officially become a green model for Europe and the world.

At the ITB Berlin tourism fair, Slovenia was declared the winner of a World Legacy Award from the National Geographic Society, which is given to companies, organisations or destinations encouraging sustainable tourism. Slovenia won in the Destination Leadership segment. "This award means a lot to us and gives us an even greater credibility in our efforts to encourage the development of sustainable tourism," commented Maja Pak, the Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board, when she collected the award.

As part of the presentations and events at ITB Berlin 2017, our country is represented by the slogan Slovenia Makes You Green, and is the most extensive thus far, both in terms of the number of participating representatives of the Slovenian tourism industry and the programme and activities. The presentation prepared by the Slovenian Tourist Board will emphasise the range of spa, cultural, and convention tourism and tourism’s focus on sustainable development.

The FIS Ski Jumping World Cup Finals in Planica, Slovenia, represent the peak of the ski jumping season. This year, the event takes place on 23rd-26th March, starting with Children’s Day on Thursday 23rd March. On this day, the valley below Ponce is traditionally visited by a number of schools and young sports fans from all over Slovenia. The following three days will be filled with a varied competition and accompanying programme, which attracts a great number of visitors from Slovenia and abroad. All the events are broadcast by a number of renowned media.

The Slovenian group Ecologists Without Borders have produced some general Zero Waste guidelines for hotels and event organisers. The first hotel to sign the Zero Waste management agreement was Hotel Ribno in Bled. Matija Blažič, the hotel manager, expects to improve their market position as well as creating savings. The Zero Waste measures, which will be launched shortly, are adapted to Slovenian conditions for following sustainable development.

According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS), Slovenian tourism recorded almost 11 million overnight stays in 2016, which is 8% more than in 2015. With 11% more foreign tourist arrivals and 10% more overnight stays by foreign tourists in 2016, Slovenian tourism is once again ranked above the European and global averages.
