Become the Cycling Ambassador of Slovenia

As part of pre-activities for the Tour of Slovenia cycling race, Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) invites cyclists to participate in the competition for the Cycling Ambassador of Slovenia. Between 30 May and 4 June 2017, the winners will have a chance to experience the unforgettable cycling adventure in Slovenia. What is more, while they will cycle from one place to another, they will be equipped with cameras and enable the public to join their cycling adventure through digital channels. The Tour of Slovenia Cycling Race will for the first time in history be broadcast by the most watched TV sports network, Eurosport.

The love of bees in green, active and healthy Slovenia dates far back into the past, and this passion has been passed from generation to generation for decades. Slovenia was the homeland of Anton Janša (1734-1773), a pioneer of modern beekeeping. Slovenian beekeepers celebrate the day of his birth, 20th May, and the Slovenian Beekeeper's Association have submitted an initiative for this day to be proclaimed as World Bee Day. Celebrate it in Slovenia in Laško, a Slovenian town with a strong beekeeping tradition, in Žirovnica at Anton Janša’s beehives, or treat yourself to an apitherapy session.

Featuring prearranged meetings between Slovenian tourism providers and foreign tour operators, the SIW is an opportunity to strengthen successful partnerships and encourage new connections.

The 24th Tour of Slovenia cycling road race, which will start on 15th June in Koper and finish four days later in Novo mesto, will be broadcast live by the European sports network Eurosport. The broadcast is supported by the Slovenian Tourist Board after securing financial resources for the project, which will also promote Slovenia as a green tourist destination.

Join an organised hike around the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, on the first weekend of May (4th to 6th May). The traditional Walk along the Wire celebrates when Ljubljana was freed of the barbed wire during the Second World War. One of the largest sports events in the capital has been held every year since 1957. On Saturday, hikers are joined by joggers in the three-member team run. This event promotes recreation and traditionally opens Ljubljana’s running season.

The old Slovenian saying tells that beekeeping is the poetry of agriculture. Among every thousand citizens of Slovenia, four people are beekeepers. The Slovenian Professional Guides Association (KPTVS) and Slovenian Beekepers’ Association, have established the first api-tourist guide licences for Slovenia. The guide designation is unique in the world. As ambassadors of Slovenian api-tourism, api-tourist guides represent a connection between the providers of beekeeping tourism and tourists. Get to know the world of the Carniolan honey bee (Apis mellifera carnica), autochthonous peace-loving bee which is the second most widespread species in the world. Their beehives are genuine treasure houses of health – offering benefits ranging from sweet honey to the healthful products used in apitherapy treatments.

The Snovalec award encourages the promotion and fulfilment of new ideas in tourism, which will, when they are implemented in the future. This year, the professional jury chose 4 finalists from 45 applications.

In the heart of Maribor, the oldest vine in the world still grows in front of the Old Vine House. The confirmed age of this “Žametovka” or “Modra Kavčina” vine is over 400 years, which won it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest noble vine in the world still bearing grapes. Among 140 candidates, STB was listed as 15th. The jury evaluated the tourism organisations from around the world mostly by their web sites.
