Planica traditionally hosts the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup finals
From 24 to 28 March, after successfully hosting the World Championship, Planica will once again host the grand final of the World Cup in ski flying 2020/2021. Last year, the event was cancelled due to the start of the spread of coronavirus.
Next to three originally scheduled competitions (two individual and one team competition), another one will be added on 25 March, to replace the match on March 21 in Vikersund, Norway. There are currently 16 competing teams registered.
Due to the epidemiological situation in Slovenia and generally in Europe, this year's competition in Planica, which traditionally attracts tens of thousands of fans, will be held without live spectators. Access to the valley below Ponce will thus be limited. From Monday onwards, the valley has been closed to all outside visitors. Access will be possible only to accredited persons.
The event is expected to be watched live by around 30 million viewers worldwide. The competition will be broadcast live in Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland, France, Finland, Norway, Switzerland, the USA and elsewhere.
Planica is one of the most recognizable icons in Slovenia, and ski jumping in Planica is one of the most internationally recognized sporting events in Slovenia. The Slovenian Tourist Board recognizes the importance of such events, which upgrade the image of Slovenia as an excellent destination for active recreation and preparation of athletes and strengthen the value of the I feel Slovenia brand.
