The Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) is intensifying promotional activities on foreign markets, particularly those neighbouring Slovenia. Yesterday in Budapest, the STB held a presentation for select Hungarian journalists, tour operators and travel agents at the exquisite location of the green Várkert Bazár terrace, during the official visit of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, and the accompanying delegation.

Hungary is one of the fastest growing incoming tourism markets for Slovenian tourism. Due to the diverse and sustainable choices, safety, proximity and unrestricted crossing of the border between the two countries, Slovenia hopes to see an increasing number of visitors in the months to come.

The Minister of Economic Development and Technology, Zdravko Počivalšek, who is also a member of the official delegation, used this occasion to point out that tourism has suffered serious consequences due to the temporary suspension of international travel and the closure of accommodation facilities and hospitality operations. "The epidemiological situation requires tourism service providers to ensure high hygiene standards, which will be an important factor when choosing a tourist destination. In 2017, Slovenia adopted the Strategy for the Sustainable Growth of Slovenian Tourism, outlining a clear vision of green, sustainable and responsible development as the foundation of Slovenian tourism, which will certainly offer a competitive advantage in the times we now live in. As a green, healthy and active country, popular among lovers of fine cuisine, it is bound to attract many visitors," said Počivalšek. He also highlighted the main reasons tourists will be choosing Slovenia as their destination: "With its picturesque nature, rich cultural heritage, attractive range of tourism products and superb cuisine, Slovenia is an excellent choice for tourists looking for five-star experiences and particularly for a healthy and safe holiday destination."

On this occasion, Maja Pak, Director of the STB, pointed out the increase in the number of visitors from Hungary: "With a 4.3% share, Hungarian tourists rank seventh among foreign tourists visiting Slovenia. In 2019, 190,944 Hungarian tourists visited Slovenia, which is 5.6% more than in 2018. The number of overnight stays by Hungarian tourists reached almost half a million. During their active holidays in the mountains, Hungarian tourists also express interest in culture, cities and cuisine, which, in light of Slovenia as the holder of the European Region of Gastronomy 2021 title and the recent revelation of the Slovenian Michelin star recipients, represents a further opportunity to increase Slovenia's visibility as a destination for excellent culinary experiences. We have been actively present in the Hungarian market throughout the years, which has also been reflected in the high number of visitors from Hungary. In June, we noted an increased number of visits from Hungary to the web portal Slovenia.info, which was higher than the number of visits in June 2019. In July, the STB will start advertising on trams in Budapest. Stunning images of Slovenian experiences will be inviting Hungarians to take a vacation in Slovenia." Pak emphasised that in the light of safety becoming an important factor due to the pandemic, Hungarian tourists will be looking for safe destinations, which Slovenia certainly is. "Slovenia is a destination that has been developing sustainable tourism for years and is one of the first countries in the world to design Responsible Travel Standards for Slovenian tourism, which have also been approved by the World Travel and Tourism Council."

Through the communication platform and the Green&Safe label, the STB has been promoting our commitment to providing safe, responsible and sustainable travel experiences in Slovenia."
