Slovenia had a record number of over 10,770,000 overnight stays in 2016

According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS), Slovenian tourism recorded almost 11 million overnight stays in 2016, which is 8% more than in 2015. With 11% more foreign tourist arrivals and 10% more overnight stays by foreign tourists in 2016, Slovenian tourism is once again ranked above the European and global averages.

Statistical data for 2016 show that tourism is an increasingly important industry in our green, active and healthy country, and that it also has great potential for continued growth. Tourism in Slovenia contributes close to 13% of the country’s gross domestic product, accounting for 8% of total exports and approximately 37% of service exports.

In 2016 more than 4.2 million tourist arrivals were registered in tourist accommodation, 9% more than in the previous year (domestic tourists 5% more, foreigners 11% more). By the same comparison the number of tourist overnight stays (almost 10,773,000) increased by 8% (domestic by 3%, foreigners by 10%).

The key markets, whose foreign tourists generated the most overnight stays in Slovenia, were Italy, Austria, Croatia, Germany, Serbia and the United Kingdom.
