Let's celebrate International Tourist Guide Day together!

Since 1990, 21 February has been celebrated as International Tourist Guide Day, an initiative of the World Federation Of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA). This year's theme is "Rethinking tourism; Regenerating our profession".

Let's celebrate International Tourist Guide Day together!

International Tourist Guide Day celebrates the skills of professional tourist guides and draws attention of local authorities, fellow citizens and the media to the quality and value of their work. Free tours and a number of local events take place all around the world. It has been celebrated since 1990, on the initiative of the WFTGA. Also in Slovenia, it has been celebrated for several years now and the locals have got used to the promotional guided tours around Slovenia.

Tourist guides are glad to see that tourism is returning and that visitor numbers are approaching the numbers in the pre-covid times. However, tourism is not what it used to be, visitors have changed their habits and International Tourist Guide Day is a great opportunity to address these issues. Tourist guides need to have a number of skills in addition to academic knowledge. The professional content of this year's celebration is dedicated to the standards that apply to tourist guiding.

The first standards for the activity of a tourist guide and for the training of tourist guides were adopted as far back as 2003. Slovenia was one of the signatories to the adoption of the commitments. And how is it today? The topic will be discussed also at the Round Table organised by the Slovenian Association of Regional Tourist Guides together with the Slovenian Institute for Standardisation. In addition, more than 60 live and web events in more than 30 locations around Slovenia will take place.
