Slovenia among the Best Destinations @ The Safe & Sustainable Tourism Awards

Sustain Europe provides the latest business and leisure travel news and features, guides to the best sustainable business hotels and airlines, as well as the current hot locations for the Meetings Industry and for leisure. In 2021, they announced new Safe and Sustainable Tourism Awards, an independent benchmark and reward scheme that would recognise the safest and most sustainable European travel destinations and companies, reward genuine efforts to change for the better and celebrate excellence in the MICE and tourism industry. Their aim was to find the winners that did not just implement sensible and stringent COVID-19 protocols, but those that managed to adapt well and managed to keep the sustainability in the forefront of their offerings and operations.

The 2021 award winners are destinations and providers that “have kept the sight of their aspirational, actionable sustainability goals while also being proactive in COVID-19 crisis recovery and prioritising the health of both visitors and staff”. The organisers highlighted that this year, an overwhelming number of entries for the Best Destination Category has been registered, which resulted in a very tight competition. But only the safest and most sustainable tourism destinations in Europe have been selected, those that truly represent the best of breed in the tourism industry right now. And among them is also Slovenia, which found itself in the company of Iceland, Greece, Istria, Malta & Gozo & Comino.

“This Green Country's response and resilience to the pandemic, and its hard work to maintain tourism and its incredibly high sustainability standards throughout, made it a worthy award winner.”

Sustain Europe praised the fact that Slovenia was declared the first Green Country in the world by Green Destinations organisation in 2016 and highlighted the positive effects of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism and the implementation of the Green&Safe label: “This Green Country's response and resilience to the pandemic, and its hard work to maintain tourism and its incredibly high sustainability standards throughout, made it a worthy award winner”.
