Ljubljana on Insider’s list of honeymoon destinations
Slovenia is the only country in the world with the word LOVE in its name, while the name of the capital, Ljubljana, means “the beloved”. The travel magazine The Insider prepared a list of the Best Honeymoon destinations for all types of newly-weds. The Slovenian capital is on the list as the best destination for well-travelled couples. The green city boasts cafés and quirky art nouveau architecture, and honeymooners can explore the streets of Ljubljana Old Town, walk along the city's charming canals and bridges, or tour Ljubljana Castle.
Many start their tour of Ljubljana at Prešeren Square, encircled by classic and intriguing Slovenian architecture, which connects many of Ljubljana's main streets in the old part of the town and has been used as a meeting point throughout the town's long history. Here is also the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), where three bridges cross the Ljubljanica River and connect the medieval Old Town with the modern city. It was designed by the greatest Slovenian architect, Jože Plečnik, who shaped Ljubljana´s centre in one of the greatest architectural works of 20th century Europe.
Close-by is the Central Market (also designed by Plečnik), where you can pick up fresh fruit and vegetables from the local farmers. From the market, hop on the funicular that takes you to Ljubljana Castle for a magnificent view of the Ljubljana basin and the city. Here you can treat yourself to a delicious meal with a view. Foodies can also enjoy other gastronomic offers in the capital, joined together under the name Taste Ljubljana.
Don’t miss the numerous cultural events in the evening or just stroll along the Ljubljanica River embankment. The relaxing atmosphere is especially pleasant in the city cafés and pubs, full of friendly people.
