Slovenia easily accessible for international filmmakers and investors

In cooperation with the Slovenian Tourist Board and the Ministry of Culture, the Slovenian Film Centre presented measures to introduce the right to a cash rebate to the global film community at the European Film Market in Cannes. The main goal is to encourage creativity in the national film and audio-visual field and to promote green, active and healthy Slovenia as a fascinating filming location.

A number of movie locations have already been identified and arranged in this green, active and healthy land. In 2007, Slovenia was selected to be one of the locations for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Apart from movies, Slovenia is also popular for shooting commercials. One of the most high-profile productions was Park Pictures' The Swan for Audi. Just recently, Chuck Norris visited Slovenia to shoot the commercial for an Italian car producer.

In order to facilitate the realization of both goals, the Slovenian Government adopted a measure enabling foreign audio-visual producers to exercise the right to a cash rebate in October 2016. This is an important milestone in the development of the Slovenian film industry, allowing closer cooperation between audio-visual creativity and the commercial sector, as well as focusing on European financial perspectives. The Slovenian Film Centre offers more information about the public call and application on its official website, here. You can also read the full PR article about the cash rebate here.

Slovenia has already attracted the first cash rebate project, Intrigo – Death of an Author, directed by Daniel Alfredson. The first session of filming took place from 22 to 26 May, with the film trilogy returning to Slovenia to film the second and third parts in June and August. The crime drama, which is also filmed in Serbia, is a Swedish/US/German coproduction.
