On the occasion of the 90th birthday of one of the most important Slovenian fine artists, Jože Ciuha, the Jakopič Gallery has launched a retrospective exhibition, which will be on display until 13 April. The exhibition called "The Labyrinth of Time" presents the highlights of his long creative life and the importance of Ciuha’s oeuvre for Slovenian art.

One of the best known Slovenian painters in wider Europe, who is also involved in illustration, graphic prints, tapestries, mosaics and writing, has been living and working between Paris, Ljubljana and southern Dalmatia for the last thirty years. Jože Ciuha is not only a versatile fine artist, but also a great vagabond with a "nomadic addiction", as he calls it, since he has been travelling his whole life.

The retrospective exhibition reveals Ciuha’s constant dialogue with the world and other cultures. It took a year and a half to prepare and encompasses nearly 150 works, mostly paintings and drawings. Marija Skočir and Barbara Savenc, the curators of the exhibition, said: "This is an artist who has been creating for seven decades without interruption and there were probably not many days in his life that were not dedicated to creativity."

Jože Ciuha has always searched for inspiration on the go: in Macedonia, where he discovered the world of monumental frescoes and Byzantine tradition; in France, where the poet and critic Alain Bosquet paved his way to the Parisian art scene; in southern and south-eastern Asia, where he studied Buddhist philosophy; in South America, where he got to know old Indian cultures; in the USA, where he created and lectured at the University of Michigan, etc. For his work he has received many prestigious accolades, and he has held exhibitions all around the world. He has been named a member of the Russian Academy of Arts and a Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour.
