Ljubljana gained a network of self-service bicycles in May

As of May, visitors and citizens of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, are able to drive around Ljubljana with new city bicycles in the Bicikelj self-service system of bicycle rental, which brings an attractive additional offer of public transport in the city. 300 bicycles and 600 parking spots are available 24/7 all year round at 31 stations in the wider city centre area, and the system offers an excellent choice for short distances.

Locals and visitors will be driving the new bicycles around Ljubljana practically free of charge. Before the first use, registration on the www.bicikelj.si website is required. There are two ways of using the bicycles, weekly or annual subscription. The weekly use of the system is intended primarily for the visitors of Ljubljana, and the cost of the registration amounts to one euro − weekly users will receive a user code and personal password. Annual subscribers will be able to use the system with the Urbana card and personal password − the annual registration for the use of bicycles is just three euros and is recorded as a credit.

The stations are no more than 300 to 500 m apart, so the bicycles are always easily accessible. The system is easy to use, enabling the user to rent or return a bicycle in just a few moments at any Bicikelj station. All docking stations are equipped with terminals providing information on the availability of bicycles for hire and locations of docking stations.

For the operation and maintenance of self-service system − which will operate 24 hours a day all year round − a team of seven members will take care, and a workshop for bicycle repairs has also been set up. Bicikelj bicycle users can call the free phone number 00386 80 23 34 for assistance. In the event of damage to a bicycle, this number should be used to notify the maintenance team; they will repair the bicycle as soon as possible and return it to the station.

The Bicikelj self-service bicycle rental system was established by the Europlakat Ltd. company through the public-private partnership with the Municipality of Ljubljana. The system was designed by the JCDecaux company and has been used in over 20 cities throughout Europe and worldwide for several years. Moreover, JCDecaux received numerous awards for this system.

More information about the location and detailed instructions on the registration and rental terms are available here.
