At the junction of the Alps, the Mediterranean and the Pannonian Plain, Slovenia is in the heart of Europe. It is known as a land of pure water, and its numerous green, glacial lakes and crystal clear rivers make it a perfect location for short outdoors swimming adventures. Martin Strel, the ´Big River Man´ who swam the length of the Amazon, has launched a holiday company for those who want to paddle through Slovenian waters in his wake.

Nowadays, outdoor swimming – in lakes, rivers and the sea – is becoming a fast growing sport, and is becoming an increasingly attractive to sport enthusiats worldwide who believe it is important not only to do sport but also to be outside, in the midst of inspiring and unspoiled nature. Organised swimming in rivers and lakes is becoming an excellent choice for experienced swimmers as well as for those who expect a little more or something different from their holidyas. Programmes include: entire organisation of each trip, including guiding, coaching and accommodation to ensure safety and enjoyment. Thus, the participants are able to safely go into waters, which they could not have entered by themselves. It`s an incredible and unique experience, with destinations carefully selected to ensure that you will be swimming safely in the best of locations.

In Slovenia, these organised outdoor swimming adventure are now made possible with Strel Swimming Advetures, founded by father and son, Martin and Borut Strel. The Slovenian duo are both passionate swimmers who have much experience in open water swimming. Martin, also known as the “Big River Man”, is a renowned professional marathon swimmer, and promoter of peace, friendship and clean waters. He is also a Guinness World Record holder and has been described as the World`s Greatest Marathon Swimmer, having swum the five greatest rivers in the world: Amazon, Yangtze, Paraná, Mississippi and Danube. Borut is also an experienced swimmer. He is Martin`s lead guide and project manager for his swimming expeditions. Borut also has significant experience in guiding swimmers in several locations across the Mediterranean.

All trips use local boat pilots with years of knowledge of their waters. Qualified and experienced swimming guides look after swimmers every stroke of the way. Accommodation is chosen in order to maximise the enjoyment of the tour and most of our hotels are smaller, family-owned and close to the water. In this way the local communities are supported. At the same time, this kind of vacation is a great way for a more in-depth and genuine study of the country, its nooks and people.

Among the physical benefits of these types holidays are a workout that will leave one feeling exhilarated and well-being, a more toned post-holiday look as well as tips, coaching and guidance in open water swimming. There are also social benefits - swimming with a group of like-minded people is a fun experience and a great way to make new friends from across the world.
