Wandering the Brda

The hilly region of the Western part of Slovenia smells of wine and cherries. This is the crossroads of three worlds – Romance, Slavic and Germanic. It is one of few such environments in the whole world. Welcome to Brda where the white hamlets are scattered among romantic vineyards and full orchards. These little villages host a number of enogastronomic events, which invite you with its full tables of culinary delights. Some of the best Slovenian wines are grown in Brda due to the suitable micro-climate at the contact confluence of three climates.

The Marica Agency has prepared a 3-day trip, in which you will learn about the residents of Brda (also called “Brici and Brike”), who are among the most internationally established and recognised winemakers in Slovenia. The path along the Emerald River Soča will also guide you across the Italian border, to Cormons and Cividale, which are surrounded by the idyllic wine-growing country of Collio. It is best to look across the hills of Brda from the 23-meter-high Lookout Tower in Gonjače. Admire the medieval village of Šmartno and many wineries, where the pleasures of wine-tasting are waiting for you. Experience the orchards full of cherries and the olive groves waving along the wine roads. Try the culinary delights of the Brda cuisine in local restaurants and tourist farms and make a toast with a glass of the excellent wine produced by the “Brics”.

Within the three-day program you can also visit Italy across the border and the historic landscape of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. You can stop at the Unesco town of Cividale and meet our Slovenians abroad – the Venetian Slovenians. Before leaving you should return to Brda, to the land of invigorating moments and the region where everything is made of stone, grains and juice, as the Slovenian poet Alojz Gradnik wrote.
