What else does December in Slovenia have in store?

All Slovenian cities and towns have prepared fairytale-like decorations, Christmas and New Year markets, and festive events of all kinds, but special December adventures can be found outside the urban centres as well: a live Christmas crib in the underground setting of Postojna Cave, a romantic cable car dinner with views of snow-covered mountain tops, nerve-racking toboggan rides, museum train rides and much, much more… We have collected some ideas for special festive experiences in Slovenia.

On a walk through the underground world of Postojna Cave, the biblical story of the birth of Christ comes to life: For two decades already, the most beautiful halls and galleries of Postojna Cave, Slovenia’s most-visited tourist attraction, have seen the biblical story of the birth of Christ staged during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The Live Christmas Crib in Postojna Cave will be on display between 22 and 30 December. Visitors can view the nativity scenes while taking a relaxing walk through the Postojna underground. More information is available here.

At full moon on snow-covered Vogel above Lake Bohinj: Join a romantic night walk lit by travelling lights and a full moon on snow-covered Mount Vogel, which rises above Bohinj and offers stunning winter views of the largest Slovenian lake. During the walk you can listen to one of the Bohinj legends and learn some interesting facts about Vogel, Bohinj and Triglav National Park. The walk will take place on 14 December, 17 January, 14 February and 15 March. Further information is available here.

Every year in December Bled creates a truly special festive atmosphere:
Once a year, on Christmas Day, the well-known Bled legend of the sunken bell is brought to life again. With the help of the Bled Society for Underwater Activities, the wishing bell resurfaces from the depths of the lake. You can also join the Circle of Friendship – several thousand people will join hands around Lake Bled and form a circle of friendship. This will make for a very special experience of this world-famous Alpine pearl. Mora about the Advent programme is avalaibe here.

Head for the Sparkling Wine Festival and the Christmas and New Year market in Portorož:
An entirely different experience can be found in the Mediterranean environment of Portorož, where a Christmas and New Year market will be held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday up to 1 January 2014, while the second Sparkling Wine Festival will feature sparkling wine competitions. The highlight of the events will be on 28 December, when a concert of arias from operettas will be performed, the master knights will proclaim the sparkling wine of Portorož, and we will drink a toast. Mora about the Festival is avalaibe here.

Ice masterpieces in Kranjska Gora:
In Kranjska Gora Ice Park you can walk around ice sculptures and see Slovenian folk heroes such as Kekec and his companions, the Rezija Grdinice, King Matjaž, Peter Klepec as well as Christmas cribs. You can kiss the Frog Prince, mount an ice horse and have a photograph taken with ice angel wings. As the Park includes an ice workshop, you can see first hand how an ice brick turns into an ice sculpture. More information about the Park is available here.

Hair-raising, but safe, night sliding:
Try something different this year and take a night slide (toboggan) ride, which is offered by a number of ski centres throughout Slovenia: Kranjska Gora, Stari vrh above Škofja Loka, Jezersko, Krvavec, Velika planina and Bohinj-Vogar… Each venue is unique in its own way. Slides are available for rental.

Do you prefer more relaxed, but unusual winter adventures? In this case, “dinner on a cable”, a culinary experience in the heart of the Kamnica-Savinja Alps may be just the thing for you. The Krvavec cable cars are turned into real private little restaurants with the help of the staff from Dvor Jezeršek and Krištof. Up to four people can enjoy a three-course dinner in the privacy of their own cable car. Dinner is served over the course of two rides up and two rides down. The ride offers exceptional views of the winter landscape, only half an hour away from Ljubljana. More about this unique culinary experience is available here.

With the museum train and Grandpa Frost to the festive town of Kamnik: A unique experience that takes you from the urban capital to a romantic little medieval town located in the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The fairytale ride to Kamnik begins at Ljubljana railway station. The mighty steam engine and wooden museum carriages alone are quite a sight, and the visit of Grandpa Frost on the festively decorated train takes passengers to a winter fairytale that continues in festively lit Kamnik. The snow queen will be waiting for you, and you can walk around the stands and enjoy a cup of hot tea. More about Kamnik is available here.

If you’re a sports enthusiast, you should visit Slovenia and its ski resorts in the time of the ski cups:
Until March quite a few ski cups will be held in Slovenia. Mariborsko Pohorje will be the venue of the Golden Fox Cup scheduled to take place on 1 and 2 February 2014. Kranjska Gora will host the 53rd Vitranc Cup from 8 to 9 March 2014, while Planica Ski Jumping World Cup will again chase world records in ski jumping at the world cup taking place from 20 to 23 March 2014.
