Škofja Loka near Ljubljana is gearing up for the biggest outdoor theatre performance in Slovenia – the Škofja Loka Passion Play. The event, acted out by almost 1,000 participants, will attract more than 30,000 visitors to the town’s medieval squares and streets in March and April. The organisers are offering all tourism journalists who will cover the event on-site a free one-night accommodation. During March and April, Slovenia will celebrate a great event in the Gorenjska region. Visit Škofja Loka near Ljubljana and be a part of Slovenia’s biggest outdoor theatre performance! The streets and squares will be stage to the Škofja Loka Passion Play, the oldest preserved drama text in Slovenian language, dating back to 1721. The most interesting thing is that almost 1,000 volunteer actors, extras, and horsemen take part in the performance, bringing the biblical tale to life on the streets of one of Slovenia’s best-preserved medieval towns. The story begins with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, which sets it apart from other passion stories. In a symbolic way, this represents the beginning of humanity and the source of suffering on the one hand, and the salvation that comes with the birth and crucifixion of Jesus Christ on the other. There will be performances on 21, 22, 28, and 29 March, as well as 6, 11, and 12 April 2015.

The volunteer spirit and the whole atmosphere throughout the town make the Škofja Loka Passion Play more than just a performance. For many people the Škofja Loka Passion Play is one of the most important religious experiences during Lent, while many are just excited about the event, which they consider a grand performance, giving them an authentic cultural experience and the spirit of a bygone era with its costumes and old accents. The glow of torch light and special effects lend a special atmosphere to the evening performance. Let time stop while visiting Škofja Loka, a town which is vying with its passion story for entry into UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

During your trip to Škofja Loka, stop by one of the local restaurants and inns included in the Tastes of the Škofja Loka Countryside project. Don’t just let the culture inspire you, but also open the book of culinary stories that the locals have written. With this project Škofja Loka and its surroundings want to bring new life into the seasonal dishes which were once served up by their grandmothers, and to offer them to local and foreign guests. These dishes are made using the highest-quality ingredients from local, Slovenian providers and according to the old recipes, tweaked ever so slightly to accommodate the modern palate. Bon appétit in Gorenjska!
