Rough Guides places Maribor among Top 7 European destination

Rough Guides, the publisher of guidebooks, placed Maribor among the seven European destinations less known among travellers, but well worth visiting. The Drava River embankment, the oldest vine in the world and one of the oldest synagogues in Europe are but a few sights which have contributed to the rich history of the Slovenia’s second largest city. Feel Maribor!

According to Rough Guides the best time to visit Maribor is in the summer during the lively Festival Lent. The largest outdoor Slovenian festival, awarded several times by the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) has been taking place on the Drava River embankment for over 20 years. On the same side of the river, you can visit the oldest grape vine in the world. It has become the symbol of the rich Slovenian wine-producing tradition with its almost 500-year history. Follow the town streets which will bring you to the beautiful town park. This green oasis and bars in the town centre are popular meeting points for the residents of Maribor and its numerous visitors. The city bursts into life in sunny weather when it is awash with students. Don’t forget that Maribor is also a university town. The capital of the Štajerska region was the European Youth Capital in 2013 and the 2012 European Capital of Culture. In wintertime, the centre of lively activity moves from the town to the Mariborsko Pohorje ski slopes. The ski centre is a popular destination for winter sports where the Golden Fox, Alpine Ski World Cup for Women, also takes place. Pohorje is a popular sports destination for hikers and mountain bikers in the summer.
