Unique experiences of Mežica

Mežica in Koroška is surrounded on all sides by green grassy slopes. It has always been considered the alpine tourism centre of the Mežica Valley and it is a popular destination for training top athletes and their sport teams. Mount Peca is the highest of the mountain peaks there. In addition to marvellous views, you may also be attracted by the legend of the King Matjaž and his long beard. Numerous cycling trails have been laid in the surrounding area. You may cycle to the lead and zinc mine and taste the culinary specialities of miners.

Some distance from the large cities in the Koroška region, is the small town of Mežica. Surrounded by greenery and mighty forests, it attracts lovers of nature, hikers, bikers and explorers of technical heritage. Above the landscape, Mount Peca is the highest of the mountains in the area. Paths leading to its top will provide you with spectacular views of the surroundings, while you may also be tempted to visit below ground. You may take the mine train or a mountain bike to visit the old tunnels of the lead and zinc mine. A mountain bike may also be rented in the mine. And you may row the part of the tunnels where the mine has been covered by water in a kayak. The experience does not finish here. At the end you should try a real miner`s meal. Learn about the life of miners, the minerals and rocks in the museum.

Legend has it that the King Matjaž sleeps beneath Mount Peca, and that he will awake from his sleep when his beard has wound around the table nine times. Visit the king`s cave and try to find his statute.

Hiking trails lead to other mountain tops in the neighbourhood, such as Mount Olševa and Raduha, and across the border to neighbouring Austria. The biking trails which are a paradise for the lovers of mountain biking also cross the state border and on the forestry roads provide some adrenalin-filled rides.

Before you leave you must embrace the broadest tree in Slovenia. The Najevska lime tree grows on the Najevska homestead near Črna na Koroškem. Its circumference measures approximately 10 metres.
