Ljubljana smells of roses

Green yourself! Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, is enjoying the summer. A white rose was selected as the Ljubljana rose which will adorn city parks and other green surfaces. Take a stroll to Tivoli Park where you will also find other rose varieties. Only a short walk away from Tivoli through the centre of Ljubljana is the Botanical Garden, the oldest botanical garden in south-eastern Europe. The entire central Slovenia is renowned for countless blossoming gardens and green parks.

The oldest known Slovenian records on roses date back to the 15th century. Half a millennium later, Slovenia’s capital and the European Green Capital 2016 obtained its own white Ljubljana rose. The selection took more than a year. The Slovenian Rose Society invited rose growers from around Europe to participate in the selection. The roses were planted on the first day of spring in 2014 and since then the expert jury has been monitoring and assessing their growth and blooming. This June, Slovenia’s capital acquired its own rose, Ljubljana. The white beauty is enjoying the sunshine in town parks and other public green surfaces. You can find it in the rose garden, encircled by a sandy walking path in Tivoli Park, where the voting took place. The rose is accompanied also by other blooming beauties.

After a short walk from the city centre, you will find yourself in the Ljubljana Botanical Garden, which has been operating since 1810 and is the oldest botanical garden in south-eastern Europe. It is a home to more than 4.500 different plants. The residents of Ljubljana like to wander about the nicely arranged garden paths where treetops offer nice shade in hot summer days.

The entire central region of Slovenia is renowned for its blossoming gardens and green parks. Arboretum Volčji Potok, located near Ljubljana, is one of the most important garden heritage sites in Slovenia, and was also declared as a cultural monument of national significance. Take a walk along the carefully maintained gardens of the former castle complex where over 3,500 trees, flower and other plant species can be found.
