The most beautiful panoramic roads in Slovenia

Drive along local roads and indulge in the experience of green Slovenia. The “Solčava Panoramic Road – the road with the most beautiful views” opened at the end of June. With its 37 kilometres it is one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in Slovenia. Venture from Kranjska Gora in the Gorenjska region over the Vršič Pass or to Jezersko and experience an authentic Slovenia on the outskirts of Alpine peaks.

A drive along panoramic roads is all about the excitement of discovering these gems of Slovenia. Choose the Solčava Panoramic Road, one of the most beautiful and first themed roads in Slovenia. On a 37-kilometre long road with the most beautiful views admire the peaks of the Karavanke and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Beautiful vistas, pristine nature and delicious local food will accompany you on the panoramic road. Solčavsko, the harmony of three valleys, welcomes you with open arms. Start the circular route in Solčava. Drive to the Logar Valley, one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in Europe. Continue to the valley of Robanov kot, where you will find large mountain homesteads which still follow the tradition of mountain farming. You can also visit the valley of Matkov kot, which has a unique natural feature, Matkov Škaf, a crater-like snow pit created every spring by the force of a 40-metre waterfall.

The views of the Karavanke and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps are the reward offered you by the scenic road to Jezerski vrh pass or to Jezersko. Turn north in Kranj and you soon enter a narrow valley with the Kokra River. The road is a particular favourite of motorcyclists who enjoy the winding bends. You will meet many cyclists who frequently stop at Lake Planšar, a remnant of the former large glacial lake, which the locals dammed in the shape of a heart, set up a walking trail around it and built a lovely inn with local specialities.

To find almost fairy-tale views of the highest Slovenian peaks, drive from Kranjska Gora towards the highest Slovenian road pass, Vršič, which links the Upper Sava River Valley with the Trenta and the Soča River valleys. Be captivated by the beauty of Triglav National Park, the stony slopes of the Julian Alps, high mountain plants and you can frequently encounter some high mountain animals. Due to the provision of military supplies to the Isonzo Front, the road was built already in 1915 by Russian prisoners of war. In their honour, the road was named the Russian road and a Russian Chapel was built by side of the road. While ascending 24 hairpin bends, direct your attention to the left. In the rock face of Prisank mountain, look for the Prisojnik Window, a natural opening, and the Heathen Maiden, an image of a woman’s face. The Alpine slope hides a true treasure on the Trenta side of the pass. Here is the spring of one of the most impressive Alpine rivers in Europe, the emerald Soča River. Its karst spring is considered the most beautiful in the Alps. The river then continues its journey to the valley of Trenta and the Soča River Valley.
