EasyJet, Europe’s leading airline, has announced that there will be a new route from London Gatwick to Ljubljana starting on 5th December 2016. Slovenia is the perfect destination for winter sport lovers, with resorts only a 30-minute drive away from the airport. Try alpine skiing on the slopes of Vogel and Krvavec; in Kranjska Gora, go on an ice climbing tour accompanied by a mountain guide; or participate in outdoor survival courses. More family-friendly sporting options include sledging in Bled on the ski slopes or the toboggan tracks in Kranjska Gora. Visitors can also try snowshoeing across the Pokljuka plateau in some of Europe’s most breathtaking landscapes.

Arriving just as the festive season gets underway, visitors taking the new flights between London and Ljubljana will be welcomed by lights illuminating the city centre, which is filled with Christmas markets decorated with ornaments, and vendors selling local, authentic crafts and specialties and the scents of roast chestnuts and mulled wine filling the air. 2016 has proved to be a particularly exciting year for Slovenia’s capital city, which has enjoyed the title of European Green Capital 2016 and will host the Global Green Destinations Day Conference.

The European Green Capital award has created a buzz around the city’s excellently preserved green spaces and the countless hidden gardens in the heart of the city centre. Already known for the beautiful architecture of Jože Plečnik, the laid-back, friendly approach of the locals and authentic Slovenian cuisine, the city’s sustainable approach to everything from reducing traffic through increased pedestrianisation to the preservation of important green landmarks such as one of Europe’s oldest botanical gardens has brought new interest from business and the public alike.

Mladen Ljubisic, Head of the Slovenian Tourist Board for the UK & Ireland, commented: "We are delighted that easyJet has decided to open Gatwick flights to Ljubljana. Slovenia presents one of the fastest-growing markets for UK travellers and easyJet has made the right decision to open a Gatwick-Ljubljana connection as well. It presents a perfect opportunity for travellers to experience all that Slovenia has to offer, and it is equally fantastic news for the MICE industry."
