French are Discovering Slovenian Architecture

The May issue of France's leading tourism magazine Grands Reportages featured a series of travelogues on Adriatic countries, highlighting their remarkable feats or symbols.

Croatia was featured as »The Forgotten Adriatic«, Montenegro with the “ecological paradise of Skadar Lake”, Albania with its modernised capital Tirana, and Slovenia—as “the only Central European country in the Adriatic region”—with a comprehensive report on modern Slovenian architecture.” Slovenian architecture has undergone a remarkable change of generations after the country declared independence. The new Slovenian architecture is fresh, colourful, innovative and created by young enthusiasts,” author Rafael Pic wrote. ”This time we wanted to create a different image of Slovenia, not through nature and diversity but, as the author puts it, as a young, fresh and innovative country,” Liza Japelj of the Slovenian Embassy in Paris added, the driving force behind Slovenia's inclusion in the series. ”This is what really sets us apart from the other Adriatic countries.” The author and photographer's trips around Slovenia were sponsored by the Slovenian Tourist Board. The travelogue has earned a wide audience, and the same goes for the exhibition of architect Jože Plečnik's work and life on display in another French-speaking city, Brussels. The exhibition is part of Slovenia's promotion during its EU Presidency and is a real treat for Belgian architecture and art buffs, as Plečnik is considered a cult personality in Slovenia much like Baron Victor Horta in Belgium. The exhibition is on display in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts until 20 August.
