Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) is one of thegreatest artists of all time, and the etchings for which he was best known during his lifetime were influential for centuries after his death.
The National Gallery of Slovenia, in collaboration with the Rembrandt House Museum, will present around 35 of the artist's prints and more than a dozen works by his contemporaries and later artists who were influenced by Rembrandt. The works on show will include studies, landscapes, scenes from the Old and New Testaments, portraits of his contemporaries and, of course, his self-portraits. Rembrandt was the first artist to consistently jot down his own likeness; his restrained gaze exudes a quiet melancholy and gentle humanism that still draws visitors from all over the world.
