In 2006, a unique site was discovered in the area — harking back to the times of Roman settlement — during highway construction works. The research carried out on the buildings and the numerous articles found there reveals that the settlement was established almost 2,000 years ago and was preserved for nigh-on 400 years.
The settlement features elements which are typical of a Roman countryside villa (villa rustica), which perhaps also had the function of a roadside stopping place (mansio). The route of an old Roman road west of the site also would appear to support this assumption.
The site comprises the remnants of five stone-built farm and residential buildings which once formed a single unit. The most important units were built on two storeys and some featured central heating systems – in the floor and walls. The residential quarters also had baths. These were decorated by mosaics, while the walls of some of the houses were adorned by wall paintings.
Furthermore, a large number of small artefacts were also discovered, which give a better picture of the life of the residents at the time.
