Below Predjama Castle an underground stream called the Lokva has hollowed out a cave whose passages are distributed over four distinct levels. The highest level consists of “Erazem’s Gap” and “Fiženca”. On the second level an entrance leads into the “Stable” and the “Names Passage” (the Main or Old Cave), where signatures of visitors from the 15th century onwards have been found. The third level can really be distinguished only in the entrance section, while the fourth and youngest level is an active ponor cave of the Lokva stream, closed off by a siphon behind which still-unexplored watercourses lead to the Vipava. The section of the cave known as the Western Passage is suitable only for experienced cavers, owing to a number of narrow sections that are difficult to pass. There are, however, many other possibilities for adventure, including special visits to the cave in the company of an experienced guide.
