Address: Dolenje Ponikve in Dolenjska

The valley of the upper Temenica is considered the longest Slovenian blind valley. The Temenica is the longest intermittent stream in Dolenjska which disappears twice on its way towards the outflow into the river Krka. It sources below the village of Javorje south of Litija. It has Alpine characteristics in its upper tract. On its way to the village of Ponikve (ponikve=sink/swallow-holes, a place where the water sinks or is swallowed into the karst underground) it flows across impermeable rock, slowly and with numerous bends, however, there it transfers to permeable lime stone and disappears in several sink-holes. Some of the sink-holes are active, while others are reached by water only when the level of the water rises. Only in flood-like conditions does water reach the last sink-holes in Risanica below St. Ana.
