From grain to bread

Lower hills and valleys from lower Haloze in comparison with higher and steeper upper Haloze are more suitable for wine growing and agriculture. Although wine yards are in majority, there was enough proper pieces of land by the meadows and pastures, so that larger farms could produce enough food for them selves so they did not have to buy it as the rest of Haloze inhabitants. Such farms could be found in Dravci, scattered settlement in east part of Haloze hills, which river Drava divides from Ptujsko polje. Since time local population was occupied with agriculture, wine growing, fruit growing and trading with cattle, wine, fruit and eggs.
The collection introduces us an important peasant occupation: From grain to bread.
First you can see “kobila”, hollowed trunk on four legs, on which wheat was beat. Next important tool is “žrmlje”- hand mill used for milling wheat. Žrmlje were used in many Slovenian rural homes for many centuries, somewhere even until middle 20th century.
By žrmlje there are two contemporary mills that are driven by motor. Motor has an engraved initial KAA and a year 1965.
In the other corner you get to know peasant kitchen. “Nečke”, “karničke” and “slamnjača” were used for kneading and rising bread. Loafs were put into wood-fired oven with oven peel trough fireplace in the kitchen. At clayey door used for pinching the fireplace (zavežjaka) since 1895 there is a poker for ashes and “burklje” for moving and sticking the pots (repjaki). You can also see other diverse clayey pots and other kitchenware, sieve, diverse lamps, grindstone for knives, boiler for schnapps, etc. Interesting to see is also a trap for big rodents and a device for drying boots.
