On this trail, you will take a walk through events in the Kobarid region from prehistoric times to the present. Start the trail with a visit to the Kobarid Museum and its multimedia presentation of the World War I Soča (Isonzo) Front. The Italian Ossuary built around the Chapel of Sv. Anton marks its tragic consequences.
The trail leads you on to the remains of a prehistoric hillfort, the Roman settlement on Gradič, and Tonocov Castle on a steep and naturally protected hill above the Soča River. From here, you can walk to two well-preserved Italian defense lines with trenches, tunnels, pillboxes, and an observation post.
Cross the wooden footbridges over the Soča River and the Kozjak Stream and visit Veliki Kozjak, Slovenia’s most picturesque waterfall, falling brightly into the blue-green pool in a dark chasm.
To end your tour, conquer the stone Napoleon Bridge.
The Kobarid Historical Trail was arranged by the Kobarid Tourist Association and the Kobarid Museum more than five years ago. The trail links places in the area of Kobarid where there are important historical, cultural, and natural monuments: the Kobarid Museum, the Roman settlement and the Italian ossuary on Gradič Hill, Tonocov Castle, the Italian defense line, the Soča gorge, the waterfalls on the Kozjak stream, and the Napoleon Bridge.
The trail is five kilometers long, and it takes three to five hours to see all the sites.
