The rich
cultural history of Slovenia, the turbulent periods of the past and the settings for the creation of famous Slovenian
tales and legends can best be explored on the heritage trails. Many of them are situated in areas of
natural beauty, and you can get there on your own or accompanied by a local
guide. You can usually cover many of the trails in a few hours, while some are intended for one or several days of exploration and are furnished with pointers for refreshment with good
food and for comfortable
overnight accommodation.

Wide range of trails
Some trails have seen the development of mass
hiking events, such as the Levstik Trail from Litija to Čatež or the Jurčič Trail through the land of the tenth brother.
Special mention should also be made of those heritage trails dedicated to areas that have claimed thousands of lives. From the Soča River basin across the Karst stretched the
Soča or Isonzo
Front during the First World War. The preserved trenches and shelters are a veritable
open-air museum, and several trails have been arranged along them. In the upper reaches of the Soča Valley the sites of interest have been linked into a
Path of Peace.

The cultural heritage trail in the municipality of
Žirovnica is also well known. It leads past the homes of some important Slovenian figures, including the birth house of the greatest national poet,
France Prešeren.
Arranged along the heritage trails are also some
archaeological areas and former
pilgrimage routes.
Along the heritage trails you can also learn about the Slovenian traditions of
lace making and
skiing at Bloke, and for instance the
legend of Peter Klepec.
