Mountain trails

There are more than 7,000 km of well-marked trails across Slovenia’s hills and mountains. The best time to visit Slovenia’s high mountains, which include the Julian Alps, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Karavanke, is between late spring and early autumn, when the majority of mountain cabins are open.

There are also mountain trails across all of Slovenia’s major hill areas: Idrijsko Hribovje, Cerkljansko Hribovje, Škofjeloško Hribovje, Polhograjsko Hribovje, Posavsko Hribovje and Pohorje. You can visit these mountain trails throughout practically the entire year in good weather.

Mountain guides

For more demanding mountain trails it is wise to hire a mountain guide. There are also guides trained for protected areas, guides who are also botanists or archaeologists, and guides who specialise in a particular destination. Hiring a guide is particularly recommended in winter months, when the volume of snow in the mountains means there is a danger of avalanches.
