Kalvarija - Stari grad

Print Add to travel planner
The town of Polhov Gradec is dominated by a cone-shaped slope called Stari grad - Kalvarija (460 m), with cornices of old houses and a church leaning snugly against it. The base of the slope is embraced by the Božna River, or Velika voda, from one side, and Mala voda from the other, which converge into the Gradaščica River further downstream.

Historians believe the town's name Gradec derives from the old Slovenian fortified settlement, or gradišče, which is said to have stood atop Stari grad or Kalvarija. The castle too is estimated to date back to the period of Carantania's autonomy. The castle with its round towers and high interior walls, as depicted in the drawing found in an old manuscript, was badly damaged during a devastating earthquake in 1511 and the 1514 peasant uprising. Later, a new castle building was built in the Božna Valley. On Stari Grad, an octagonal castle pavilion, or gloriette, was later built, which was in 1853 converted into a chapel by Countess Antonija Blagay, who also initiated the construction of fourteen chapels bearing pictures of the Stations of the Cross.
