In the past the Castle was owned by the Auerspergs, whose culmination of power coincided with the period of Turkish invasions and reformation in the territory of Slovenia. It was first mentioned in 1220, but it supposedly originated in the 10th or 11th century. The original castle stood a little lower than the present, on the rocky pier from where there was a good view of the Roman road. Today, only the ruins remain. It is not possible to find out when exactly the upper castle was built, however, in the year 1318 both of the castles were mentioned. After the earthquake in 1511, a triangular building of Renaissance appearance was constructed. The East side is protected by 2 round towers, with a mighty round bastille on the end of the opposite side of the triangle.
The castle is open for visitors Saturdays from 12.00 to 19.00 Hours and Sundays from 11.00 to 19.00 Hours; Guided tours for organized groups can be arranged following previous agreement. The castle is also suitable for organized weddings. For more info call +386 1 781 03 70.
