A wealth of crystal-clear waters

Slovenia is one of the most water-rich countries in Europe. It has 27,000 km of watercourses, around 300 waterfalls and numerous natural and artificial lakes. On a walk through forests and hilly areas you can come across crystal-clear springs with water, which is typically so clean that you can also drink it. Proof of the importance of clean water in Slovenia can be seen in the fact that the right to drinking water is even enshrined in our constitution.

Protect what nature gave to us

Slovenia is home to more than 22,000 animal and plant species, including rare and endangered species. That is why Slovenia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. It is this biodiversity and countless natural features that call on us to take special care of preserving natural ecosystems. More than a third of Slovenian territory is protected and included in Europe’s Natura 2000 network, which protects biodiversity.

Triglav National Park - the Kingdom of the Goldenhorn

Triglav National Park, the only Slovenian national park, is the largest protected area in the country and covers a large part of the Julian Alps. It is named after Triglav, a 2,864-meter-high peak, which is the highest peak in Slovenia and has great symbolic importance for Slovenians. The park is home to more than 7,000 animal and 1,600 plant species. Coexistence between Slovenians on the slopes of the park and nature is reflected in various areas, thus it is not surprising that the Julian Alps biosphere reserve is the first one in Slovenia and is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves Man and the Biosphere (MAB).

Listen to the stories of Slovenian forests

Two thirds of Slovenia's territory is covered in green forests. There are many trails where you can go for a stroll and fill your lungs with fresh air and feel the revitalising energy of nature. Oases where no man has ever set foot are hiding in the vast forests. The forest provides shelter for exceptional animal species and plants, including beasts such as brown bears, wolves and lynxes. From the forest we get wood, which permeates all aspects of our life.
