April showing a drop in foreign and domestic tourism numbers

Compared to April 2012 there were 6% fewer tourist arrivals and 10% fewer tourist overnight stays registered in tourist accommodations in April 2013, according to provisional data of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia. In the same comparison the number of foreign tourist arrivals and overnight stays decreased by 9% and 14%, respectively, whereas the number of domestic tourist arrivals stayed about the same and the number of their overnight stays decreased by 4%. The results show that this year`s Easter was alerady in March, whereas last year it had an impact on April`s results.

In April 2013 in Slovenia foreign tourists made 59% of tourist overnight stays. Key European markets, from which the most overnight stays of foreign tourists in Slovenia were recorded, were Italy (21% of all foreign overnight stays), Austria (16%), Germany (9%), the Russian Federation (7%), Serbia (5%), Croatia (4%) and the United Kingdom (3%).

As regards the most important tourism markets, in April 2013 tourists from the majority of markets created fewer overnight stays than in April 2012: from Germany by 32%, from Italy and Austria by 21%, from Croatia by 19% and from the Russian Federation by 17%. In the same comparison tourists from Serbia made 9% fewer overnight stays and from the United Kingdom 6% fewer overnight stays.

Most tourists in April 2013 made overnight stays in health (spa) resorts, 36 % of all tourist overnight stays were recorded in these resorts. These resorts were followed by seaside resorts with a 23% share and by mountain resorts with a 14% share. Municipality Ljubljana recorded 12% of all tourist overnight stays.

A 14% decrease was recorded in April 2013 in health (spa) resorts. In mountain and seaside resorts 10% and 8% fewer tourist overnight stays were recorded. Municipality Ljubljana recorded 6% fewer overnight stays than in April 2012.

In April 2013 most of the tourist overnight stays were recorded in hotels (71% of all overnight stays), followed by camping sites (8%), apartment settlements and company vacation facilities and vacation facilities for youth (5% each) and private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (3%).

Compared to April 2012, in April 2013 increases in the number of tourist overnight stays were recorded in mountain huts (by 14%), in youth hostels (by 8%) and in tourist farms with accommodation (by 1%). In the same period hotels recorded 11% fewer, apartment settlements 17% fewer, camping sites 20% fewer and private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings 2% fewer overnight stays.

If we have a look at the first four months of this year, 3% fewer tourist arrivals were registered in tourist accommodations than in the same period of the previous year. In the same comparison the number of tourist overnight stays decreased by 5%. From January to April 2013 domestic tourists created 3% fewer tourist arrivals and 6% fewer overnight stays than in the same period of the previous year. The number of foreign tourist arrivals and their overnight stays decreased by 3% and 5%, respectively.
