Far from main routes and important events, for a long time the Senovo-Brestanica Valley remained closed in its own isolation. It was only in the last century that it shook off this isolation and began a period of rapid development. The main role in this development was played by the coal mine, that actually opened over 200 years ago. The high quality of the coal drew more people here and they began to settle throughout the valley. A typical mining settlement thus developed. As the mine grew, so did Senovo and the nearby settlements. The place became larger and more modern. Houses were built, old buildings were renovated and the road through the village was asphalted, followed gradually by most of the other village roads. Today the local administrative community is home to a little over 4,000 inhabitants in Senovo, Reštanj, Mali Kamen, Šedem, Dobrova, Brezje, Kališevec, Gorenji Leskovec, Stranje and Dovško.
