in the countryside
Koprivnica is a small village in the north-east of the Krka Basin, at the edge of the Kozjansko region. It lies on a low ridge between two streams. The rolling country is a patchwork of forests, meadows and brooks. Rising in the background are the hills of Reštanj (with the church of St Jost), Mrčna Sela, Ravni Log and Vetrnik. The countryside is attractive at all seasons of the year. An interesting story is told about the origin of the name of the village. It is said that a long, long time ago a young girl was pasturing a herd of cows on the little hill in the centre of the village. While she was playing she came across a Marian medal – a pendant depicting the Virgin Mary – lying in a clump of nettles. When she got home she told her family and the other villagers about her discovery. The story spread from mouth to mouth and many people apparently saw the medal. Since the medal had been found in a clump of nettles, over time the place began to be known as Koprivnica (from kopriva, the Slovene word for nettle). The Koprivnica stream, which rises at the foot of Vetrnik, marks the eastern border of the municipality of Krško, where it meets the municipality of Kozje. The soil in this area is medium fertile. This is one of the reasons why people only dedicate themselves to agriculture after work, which for the most part they found between Senovo and Krško, since there is no industry in the village itself. Vineyards cover the hill known as Šikovec, which forms part of the Bizeljsko-Sremiško wine district. A number of large apple orchards in the immediate surrounding area produce apples for juice and for drying. Visitors can learn how apples are cultivated, join in with the apple picking and stock up with apples for the winter. There are two fish farms in the area, one in Koprivnica itself and the other in Mrčna Sela. Both are modern operations and offer visitors trout of various sizes. A still-functioning watermill stands on a small stream in Mrčna Sela. Visitors are always welcome at Petrovič's Mill and, if they are expected, they will be served warm, freshly baked rolls. The surrounding countryside offers plenty of opportunities for walks, for gathering medicinal plants and for mushroom picking. There are also marked routes for cyclists. Koprivnica has an active Tourism Association and a cultural association named after the poet Anton Aškerc. Together, these two associations put on several interesting events in the village. Each year, at the beginning of June, they organise a gathering for fans of the diatonic accordion. The Feast of the Assumption, on 15 August, is another traditional event and a local holiday. Following the service in the church there is a village fair with stalls on which craftsmen display their products and the women of the village offer home-made produce and delicacies. In the afternoon, games are held at the Vrtovšek open farm, with competing teams from all the surrounding hamlets. Another annual event involves corn husking below a hayrack, complete with the traditions and customs that accompanied this activity in times gone by.
