On the left bank of Hubelj which in the past represented the border between Goriška and Kranjska, spreads the old and unique settlement Šturje with its architectural peculiarities. The nucleus of the settlement is the square to which lead the characteristic narrow streets - called 'gase'.

BASIC DATA

Points of distinction : In the Church of St. George (Sv. Jurij) in the centre of Šturje you can admire the ceiling frescos of the Ways of the Cross made by the famous painter Tone Kralj.
Famous citizen : Milan Klemenčič, the first Slovenian puppeteer lived in Šturje in the 1920’s. In his own house he created the first puppet theatre and made marionette puppets. The majority of the original puppets by Milan Klemenčič are kept at the Puppet Theatre in Ljubljana where several years ago the Faust by Klemenčič was put on stage anew.
