The Story of the World's Oldest Wheel

The invention of the wheel stands as the foundation of human civilization and culture. Remarkably, the world’s oldest wooden wheel with an axle, dating back 5,200 years, was discovered in Slovenia.

Crafted from two ash wood panels and joined by four oak wedges, the wheel features a central rectangular opening for the axle. The wheel’s technological sophistication and ancient origin place it at the pinnacle of the world’s cultural heritage.

A few steps into the Slovenian rainforest and you'll envy the deer – so free in their green home. Even though you have no roof over your head, the vast beech treetops offer you shelter. Beneath the canopy, you will have the time to listen to raindrops falling on fallen leaves and the distant hooting of owls. And let the wolves’ howling be your warning when the full moon rises.

Opera is pure drama in its most convincing form. Every whispered betrayal, every forbidden kiss and every vengeful conspiracy is loudly revealed in an aria that could shatter glass and gives us goosebumps. Compared to this intoxicating mix of music and melodrama, modern soap operas are like fairy tales. Born in ancient Italy, opera has been adopted by Slovenia-a-a-A-a-a, and now you can enjoy it on our Sounds Like Slovenia channel.

It takes time to make wine. The grapes are first pampered by the sun, then by the autumn wind. Then the wind rattles signal that it is time for a bath and a massage in a wooden press. The next step is fermentation, which transforms it into a divine elixir. It takes several months, sometimes several years, to make wine. You will need no more than six minutes, two glasses and good company. Cheers!

Creating a work of art is a delicious act of seduction, as the artist stares at the blank canvas like a lover waiting to be touched. Every brushstroke excites, every drop of paint is a whispered secret. It is an intimate process. When finished, the artist – completely out of breath and covered in paint from head to toe – wonders how something so primitive could turn out to be a thing of such sublime beauty.

When hearing the chirping of birds in the Zadnjica Valley in Triglav National Park, it rarely occurs that an avalanche of icy rocks could crash down the next moment. Ball sports run deep in Slovenia. The bouncing of a ball can echo like birdsong in a park – a soft, familiar and lively sound. Competitive shouts blend with the chatter of spectators on worn benches.
